Cardiff welcomes eminent psychologist Professor Howard Gardner
On Friday 19 November, Harvard University Professor Howard Gardner and former IB Director General Professor George Walker led two stimulating academic seminars at the IB Cardiff office.
Professor Gardner is the Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Senior Director of Harvard Project Zero. Twice voted as one of the 100 most influential public intellectuals in the world by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines, Professor Gardner has written over 25 books which have been translated into 28 languages and is best known in the educational community for his theory of multiple intelligences.
In the first of the two sessions, Professor Gardner reviewed the work of his research and current thinking about ethics and the new digital media, exploring the impact of 21st century technologies on identity, privacy, ownership and authorship, trust, and community.
During the second session, Professor Gardner gave a preview of his soon-to-be-published book Truth, beauty, and goodness reframed: Educating for the virtues in the 21st century. In this publication, Gardner illustrates how, in a postmodern, digital era, educators can convey powerful notions of truth, beauty, and goodness.
IB academic staff were given the opportunity to interact with both Professor Gardner and Professor Walker regarding the seminars and to explore how the theories discussed might relate directly to the development of the IB curriculum, programmes and assessment.
