Middle Years Programme (MYP)
MYP: latest developments
By Malcolm Nicolson, head of MYP
Overview of his presentation at the IB Latin America regional conference in Costa Rica, June 2008
This is an exciting period of time for the MYP with two upcoming major publications. In August MYP: From principles into practice will be published. It combines the old Areas of interaction and Implementation and development of the MYP guides. This new guide clarifies many areas of the MYP in addition to containing the first MYP unit planner. The required planning process places areas of interaction and significant concepts at the heart of planning, with summative assessment planned from the beginning. In September, example interim objectives for years 1 and 3 of the programme, in each of the eight subject groups, will be published. These objectives are aligned with the year 5 final objectives.
Other developments include a survey of schools in September to examine the MYP to Diploma Programme transition; improved resources for workshop leaders; and online workshops.

Coherence between MYP and DP
During the IB Latin America regional conference held in Costa Rica, Malcolm Nicolson, head of MYP and Tristian Stobie, head of DP development conducted a session about the coherence between MYP and DP.
The presentation showed the similarities in the beginnings, philosophies and fundamental principles that drove the development of both programmes. Close examination shows many similarities in general aims and in assessment principles. The MYP structure precedes the Diploma nicely with areas of interaction leading to ways of thinking and action required for the Diploma core in particular. At IB Cardiff, there are many shared initiatives and ways in which Diploma and MYP staff meet on a regular basis, and in particular they work together in curriculum review.
