Bali International School, Indonesia
Bali International School is an authorized PYP, MYP and Diploma IB World School located in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia with a twenty-year history of serving the expatriate community in Bali.
Despite some dramatic events such as the bombings of 2002 and 2005, our school has continued to grow. Currently we have 300 students spanning the three programs and we predict a steady rise in numbers over the next few years. BIS began its journey to become an IB World school when its MYP program was authorized in 1999. Our Diploma and PYP programs were both authorized in 2004. 2007-2008 will see the evaluation visits for both the PYP and MYP programs. Also, in 2007-08 the school is having a joint visit from WASC and CIS. The last couple of years have seen a flurry of activity as the school has decided to develop a full set of standards and benchmarks that not only reflect the requirements of the IB programs but also the requirements of the other accreditation agencies.
Last year we were thrilled with the results of our first Diploma students who sat the exams. Two students completed the full diploma and a number sat for certificates. We’re looking forward to some excellent results as the diploma program grows at the school. We are pleased to offer a variety of courses from each of the groups and are looking forward to expanding our program as the student numbers increase.
MYP might be the oldest program in the school but has not stopped evolving. For the last three years, we have been developing a strong service-learning element in our MYP Program. We foster holistic learning and intercultural awareness through service learning projects. Our projects serve as interdisciplinary units and create authentic contexts for students to put into use the skills and concepts they acquire through the formal curriculum. Highlights from this years projects included support for a local orphanage, involvement in a local school scholarship project, the development of Bali’s first public-lending library and the creation of an interschool house league system. This marks the seventh year we’ve done the MYP Personal Project and this year’s batch produced some of the strongest projects we’ve seen to date.
The implementation of the PYP program provides a program of inquiry that is relevant and challenging for the students from Preschool through Grade 5. We have composite classes in Grades 1 – 2 and Grade 3 – 4 as well as for our nursery and pre-school groups. As a result, our POI is set for two years. We are constantly refining the units and trying to tie as much as possible to the local community. We have effective relationships with parents and host a Share-time every second Friday last period when the whole community is invited to watch the students demonstrate learning from their units of inquiry.
All three sections have taken the Learner Profile onboard and it can be seen, not only displayed around the school, but also on reports, self-reflection in technology, C&S and CAS end of project evaluations and essays in English.
The school has a coordinator for each section and meetings are held regularly to discuss both the horizontal and vertical articulation of concepts covered by the three IB programs.
