IB Asia Pacific Newsletter
Quarter Two, 2008
Middle Years Programme
It’s that time of year … Asia Pacific schools on a northern
hemisphere academic year are drawing to a close and
numerous staffing changes are taking place. MYP coordinators
are reminded to add incoming staff to the OCC and delete
remove departing staff. Workshop leaders who are changing
schools and/or departing the region are also requested to notify
the IB Asia Pacific office at ibapmyp@ibo.org.
IBAP MYP Schools Update
There are currently 103 authorized MYP programmes in the Asia
Pacific region. Interest in the programme continues to grow
steadily. Since 31 March this year, the majority of school visits
conducted by IB Asia Pacific staff and other team members
have been for schools’ first evaluation since authorization. This
reflects the MYP’s “coming of age”. Three schools from across
the region Australia and China) have also completed their MYP
pre-authorization/consultation visits and are looking forward to
their authorization visits in the coming academic year.
Forthcoming publications include:
- The Principles into Practices Guide August 2008
- MYP Coordinator’s handbook 2008-09 1 July 2008
- Language A guide
The Maths guide is now being translated into Chinese, French
and Spanish. January 2009
Draft documents were produced and consultation with interested
science teachers on the Science Review Forum on the OCC is
being carried out.
Professional Development
The 2008 MYP workshops in Jakarta, Adelaide and Sydney were
consistently well attended with 550 MYP teachers attending 24
workshops.
MYP coordinators are reminded to register early and, if the
workshop is showing full, add teachers’ names to the waiting
list. If the list warrants it, we will add an additional section.
The number of participants registered for MYP online workshops
is very high. Details of online workshops can be found at

Languages and the MYP in Asia Pacific: An observation
A significant change has transpired over the past four years in
Asia Pacific. Schools have been developing significantly
improved practices reflected in the sophistication of their
language policies in general and, most importantly in their
practices in supporting second language acquisition and mother
tongue development.
