Diploma Programme

Level 3 workshop initiatives

As you are aware, in recent years we have moved from having all subject workshops as mixed level workshops to a system that caters for levels 1, 2 and 3. While mixed level workshops proved satisfactory up until now, it is clear that for teachers who have been involved in the Diploma Programme for some time, there is a need for greater challenge and variety at or beyond level 3. We are attempting, therefore, to initiate a variety of models for level 3 workshops that go beyond what has been offered to date. Our first venture in this regard is in the Sciences for the three level 3 workshops to be held next year at Kuala Lumpur from 26-29 March. These workshops will combine some aspects of a ‘traditional’ workshop with attendance at the EARCOS conference, allowing for an exchange of ideas and flexibility of format. The three workshop leaders will run the workshop sessions and also present four science related topics during the EARCOS conference. We hope to extend the range of level 3 workshops to other subjects in future. As always we are indebted to all our workshop leaders for the time and commitment they give to the IB, and in the particular case of Kuala Lumpur to Antony Mayrhofer, Michael McCann and Gary Piech for their enthusiasm in developing a new workshop format.

A note regarding workshop registration

If you are registering for a workshop and the workshop is designated as ‘full’, please make sure that you put yourself on the wait list. If (but only if) enough names appear on a wait list we can consider offering a second workshop.

CAS release time

It would appear from comments from CAS coordinators at workshops that there are still some schools that offer no or minimal release time to CAS coordinators. A good CAS programme can help to define a school, and a good CAS programme needs considerable time to develop and maintain. The IB does not define the amount of release time required for each school context, but it certainly does state that it is the responsibility of a school’s administration to make sure that “a CAS coordinator is selected with sufficient time” to manage the programme.
