Introduction and structure of report
This report explores three strands of data to address the following objectives set out by the IB:-
- To investigate the patterns of offer-making to IB applicants
- To determine whether there are any differences in the success of IB applicants according to the subject line applied to
- To provide a profile of IB applicants
- To compare the success of IB applicants in terms of gaining offers/places with all other UCAS applicants
The strands of data are as follows:-
This section investigates whether an offer was made and whether applicants subsequently took up a HE place. The process is illustrated below and is considered sufficient to assess the success of IB applicants.

Following extraction of IB applicants from the applicant database, the original institution decision (received offer/unsuccessful) was extracted and examined to determine whether there were differences in results according to:
- Domicile (UK, EU or Non EU)
- Preferred subject line - aggregated course level based on JACS codes (eg A1 for medicine - see Appendix A for full list). The top ten subject lines for IB applicants were used for this report;
- Type of institution (a minimum of six HEIs was required in subsets in order to protect their data);
